(Outside of the Goethe Institute following a gas canister bomb attack in Thessaloniki, May ’21) On July 11th, a new network of anarchist urban guerrillas, the Direct Action Cells (DAC), put out another batch claim of non-lethal attacks across mainland Greece—their seventh total communication since announcing their formation in February 2021. The attacks included in this most recent claim targeted the home of an active Brigadier General of the Hellenic Police, two vans belonging to a popular courier company, ACS, and a vehicle belonging to telecommunications company, INTRACOM, all within the greater Athens area. The DAC’s preferred methods of attack have so far consisted of using either Molotov cocktails, or improvised incendiary/improvised explosive devices (IID/IED) fashioned from butane gas canisters to target property such as private or company vehicles, or especially where IID/IED are used, to detonate them outside the entrances of buildings housing various private and state institutions.
